Cocktail Hour
One of the classiest things you can dois to have a string quartet playing the music for your cocktail hour. This bridges the gap between the ceremony and the reception. Frequently when the ceremony is over, the guests show up at the reception location while the wedding party stays behind to finish some last minute pictures. Technically the reception hasn't actually started and so the band is still setting up. The guests mill around in silence, on occasion they might be treated to some canned music from a CD.

Having a string quartet at the reception helps to bridge that gap. The ceremony had a string quartet, having the same at the cocktail hour creates a sense of continuity. Even if the reception band was playing while the guests arrived, the lively band music at that time would be too harsh and too soon. The guests just left the tasteful classical setting of a ceremony. They need a transition period while they are getting ready for the reception entertainment. Having a string quartet play some jazz and tango selections at the cocktail hour, helps to get the guests warmed up for the rockin' band you have picked out for the reception.
